Straight Answers to Common Questions.

Why should I get a Florida Concealed Weapons License (CWL)?

There are many benefits to owning a CWL. First, as a CWL holder you skip the Florida mandatory waiting period when purchasing a firearm. Second, it is a felony to knowingly drive within 1000 feet of a school zone unless you have a CWL. Without a CWL it is also illegal to carry concealed on any property owned, rented, or used by a religious institution. Last, and maybe most important, is reciprocity. With a CWL you will be able to legally carry in 37 other states. Without it you may not.

Do I need a CWL to concealed carry in FL?

No. Florida is a constitutional carry state. No license is required to concealed carry in the state. However, just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

What are the requirements to get a FL CWL?

You must be a qualified person (eleven criteria must be met to be a qualified person), you must complete a qualifying training course (any course you take with The Agoge qualifies), and you must complete the application process with the Florida Department of Agriculture Division of Licensing.

How likely is it that I’m ever going to need to defend myself?

Only about 37% of police departments report to the FBI Unified Crime Report which is what the media uses to report whether crime is up or down. A more accurate resource is the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). According to the 2023 BJS National Crime Victimization Survey, 23 out of every 1000 Americans over the age of 12 reported being the victim of a violent crime. That’s about 1 violent incident for every 45 people per year.

What should I bring to class?

Wear range appropriate attire – no low collared shirts, closed toed shoes, a sturdy belt, weather appropriate. If you have a firearm that you intend to use for self defense, bring it. Bring ammunition (100-150 rounds) appropriate for the firearm you will be using. If using one of my firearms, I will include the cost of ammunition in your class fee. Other things you will need: eye and hearing protection, a holster if you have one, notebook and pen, a water source.

What type of holster should I buy?

Holster selection and fitment is highly personalized. Your choice will depend on factors like the type of firearm you have, how you intend to carry it, and even aesthetics. I recommend kydex over other holster materials. There are many companies that make suitable products. I am happy to offer recommendations in class.
